Help Your Dog Eat with A Paper Plate!

Updated: October 18th, 2021

I wanted to share a Picky eater tip I got from my wonderful Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) vet. 💕

Dr. Hale suggested using paper plates if your dog has an upset tummy. She said this is something that palliative care/hospice vets use. 🐾💕

Glass, plastic, metal, etc., will all retain some smell, even if thoroughly washed. It may smell clean to us, but our dogs may still smell the food smells. That smell may cause them to not want what is in the bowl if they are being super picky 😢

So, simply use a paper plate that you toss after each feeding.

This worked for my Roscoe this week.

When we got home from Dr. Hale’s visit, I put a small pile of canned green beans, canned pumpkin, cooked quinoa and cooked turkey all in separate piles on a paper plate. (I usually mix it all together.)

Then I put the plate down.

He scarfed the green beans, then decided to eat the pumpkin, then the turkey and finally the quinoa. He even ate two extra scoops (about 1 tbs) if turkey!!

All this after not wanting to eat for the last day and a half.

I’ll keep him on paper for a week or so until he’s eating more normal 🙏💙

Since I started this, Roscoe has started eating again and asking for more in between meals 💙

It may not help in many cases but if it helps just a few dogs, I am happy. 🙏💙

How do you keep the paper plate from moving all around the floor? I have two greyhounds who must be fed from an elevated feeder

This has worked for me too. I tried it a couple of weeks before the post. My girl with tcc has become really picky about eating. I tried changing bowl and then heating her food. Then one day I left it in the paper bowl I used to heat it in the microwave and just put the paper bowl down. Success. She is still picky but she does prefer the paper bowl.

yes!!! this WORKS!!! I used paper plates for both of my dogs who were in a hospice situation. I thought everyone knew this ..lol

I am so glad you put it out there. Just goes to show that sharing ALL ideas is of benefit – and don’t assume others are familiar with the ‘hack’ or help.
